Dimensional Modeling is a powerful tool for an organization to use to allow for ad hoc reporting, however what does it mean to truly live with a dimensional model?

After the consultants have left and the initial project teams dispersed how will dimensional modeling effect both the day-to-day operations and what long term implications does this have for your organization?

This presentation will cover the following topics:

  • Very brief introduction and background on dimensional modeling
  • Brief history on Allstate Insurance‚Äôs Data Warehouse converting to dimensional modeling
  • Detailed examination of the impact on day-to-day operations including cost-benefit analysis
  • Unexpected obstacles and implemented or proposed solutions

I graduated from Purdue University with a BA in Systems Integration and was hired by Allstate Insurance initially as a Java Developer. Through an internal rotational program I worked as an ETL Developer in the data warehouse before becoming a Data Analyst focusing on logical design, database design, and data modeling. Now I am the lead Data Analyst for Allstate Data Warehouse - Claims team. Recently my project work has been focused on converting older claims systems into Allstate's new dimensional modeling reporting structure.
